Dentistry in the 21st century is benefitting from advances in many areas of medical technology. But alongside these advancements a parallel improvement in management of medical conditions continue to emerge. Populations increase in size and average age of death rises. Consequently, the number of patients attending dental practice with a medical diagnoses which may require pharmacological support is increasing. This puts pressure on the dental profession to be able to deal with these potential challenges and plan treatments which take into account any relevance these issues may have on a successful predictable outcome. Thus this talk will explore relevant medical conditions and treatments and approach them with a WHITE approach, namely i) What is the medical condition ii) How is it treated, iii) what Impact does it have on dental treatment iv) what impact does the dental Treatment have on the medical condition and v) can the condition be managed if it becomes an Emergency. Time will also be spent considering the proposed link between dental disease and systemic medical conditions.
